Plugs & Tunnels: The Beginner's Guide to Ear Stretching
Share
You've seen them. Bold, dramatic, undeniably cool.
Plugs and tunnels are one of the most expressive forms of body modification out there — and if you've been curious about ear stretching, this is your sign to start. No gatekeeping. No judgment. Just the real information you need to do it right.
Here's everything a beginner needs to know about plugs, tunnels, and the art of ear stretching.

What Are Plugs and Tunnels?
They look similar but they're not the same.
Plugs are solid pieces of jewelry that sit in a stretched earlobe. They can be flat, domed, or decorative — made from wood, stone, metal, glass, acrylic, and more. The face of the plug is what you see from the front.
Tunnels — also called eyelets — are hollow. You can see straight through them. They give a dramatic open look and are a staple in the stretching community.
Both sit in the same place. The difference is purely aesthetic. Pick whichever fits your vibe.

Understanding Gauge Sizes
This is where beginners get confused. Let's clear it up.
Gauge (G) measures the thickness of the jewelry. Here's the thing — the lower the number, the thicker the jewelry. So a 00G is much larger than a 16G.
Standard ear piercings start at 20G or 18G. Most people begin their stretching journey at 16G and work their way up gradually.
Common stretching milestones:
- 16G → 14G → 12G → 10G → 8G → 6G → 4G → 2G → 0G → 00G
After 00G, sizes switch to inches — 7/16", 1/2", and beyond.

The Golden Rule: Go Slow
Ear stretching is not a race. Rushing it is how you end up with blowouts, tears, and damage that's hard to reverse.
The general rule: wait a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks between each size increase. Some people wait longer — and that's smart. The slower you go, the healthier and more elastic your lobes stay.
Your ears will tell you when they're ready. Mild pressure is normal. Pain, bleeding, or tearing is not — stop immediately if that happens.
How to Stretch Your Ears Safely
Here's the basic process:
1. Start with clean hands and clean jewelry. Hygiene is non-negotiable. Wash your hands before touching your ears or your plugs.
2. Warm up your lobes. A warm shower or warm compress before stretching softens the tissue and makes the process smoother and less uncomfortable.
3. Use a taper. A taper is a cone-shaped tool that gradually widens the piercing to guide in the new plug. Insert slowly and follow with your new jewelry immediately.
4. Use a lubricant. Jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, or a body-safe lubricant helps the jewelry slide in smoothly without tearing.
5. Aftercare. Clean twice daily with saline spray. Massage your lobes with jojoba oil regularly to keep the skin supple and healthy.

Best Materials for Beginners
Not all materials are created equal — especially for fresh stretches.
Implant-grade titanium — best for fresh stretches. Lightweight, hypoallergenic, non-porous.
Surgical steel (316L) — solid everyday option for healed stretches.
Glass — smooth, non-porous, and great for healed lobes. Easy to clean.
Wood & stone — beautiful and organic looking but porous. Only wear in fully healed, healthy stretches. Never in fresh ones.
Acrylic — affordable but porous and can harbor bacteria. Best avoided for new stretches.
Start safe. Once your lobes are fully healed and stable at a size, you can experiment with more materials.
Can You Go Back?
The big question everyone asks.
For smaller gauges — generally 2G and below — most people can shrink back close to a standard piercing size if they stop stretching and allow time. Results vary by person, skin elasticity, and how long you've been at a size.
Beyond 2G, shrinkage becomes less predictable. Some people retain significant closure, others don't. If permanence is a concern, take your time before committing to larger sizes.
